Candle Care Guide

Lighting a candle is a simple act, but how you care for it makes a difference. Not just in how it burns, but in how long it lasts and how it feels to live with. Candle care is not about being perfect. It is about understanding a few small details that allow the flame to do what it was designed to do.

A well cared for candle burns more evenly, smells better, and becomes part of a quiet ritual rather than a rushed moment.

The First Burn Matters Most

The first time you light a candle is the most important burn it will ever have. This is when the candle sets its memory.

For the first burn, allow the wax to melt nearly to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing. This helps prevent tunneling and encourages an even burn for the rest of the candle’s life.

For best performance, the initial burn should last about three to four hours. Try not to exceed four hours on the first burn. This gives the candle enough time to establish a full melt pool without overheating or stressing the wax.

Patience here goes a long way later.

Finding a Steady Burn Rhythm

After the first burn, candles do best when burned with intention and balance.

For Wanderlight soy coconut candles, aim for burn times between two and four hours. Avoid very short burns, and do not exceed four hours at a time. This helps protect the vessel, reduces soot and wick mushrooming, preserves fragrance integrity, and keeps the flame steady throughout the life of the candle.

Burning within this window allows the candle to perform consistently from beginning to end.

Why Wick Trimming Matters

Even a well wicked candle benefits from regular trimming.

Before each burn, trim the wick to about one quarter of an inch. This is especially important after longer burns.

A trimmed wick encourages a cleaner flame, reduces soot, helps maintain an even melt pool, and supports better scent throw throughout the candle’s life.

If you notice the wick curling or forming a small mushroom, a quick trim will keep everything glowing smoothly. That small mushroom is simply carbon buildup, which is completely normal with natural wax candles and does not mean the candle is dirty or poorly made.

Extinguishing the Flame Thoughtfully

How you extinguish a candle matters just as much as how you light it.

Blowing out a candle can sometimes leave behind a smoky scent. If you prefer a cleaner finish, gently dipping the wick into the melted wax and then straightening it back up can help eliminate smoke and prime the wick for the next burn. A wick dipper makes this easy, but a careful tool works just as well.

Some people also prefer using a candle snuffer, which gently covers the flame to extinguish it without blowing air across the wax. Both methods work well and help keep the candle tidy between burns.

Always avoid using water to extinguish a candle. Water and hot wax do not mix and can cause splattering or damage to the vessel.

Extinguishing the flame with intention is part of the ritual.

When to Stop Burning

Candles are meant to be enjoyed, but not burned all the way down.

Stop using the candle when about half an inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. This helps prevent overheating the glass and protects both safety and quality.

Ending a candle thoughtfully is part of caring for it.

If a Candle Starts to Tunnel

Sometimes a candle may begin to burn down the center while wax remains along the edges. This is called tunneling, and it usually happens when a candle is extinguished before the wax has had time to melt evenly across the surface.

If this happens, allow the candle to burn a little longer during the next use so the melt pool has time to reach the edges of the vessel. With patience, many candles will gradually correct themselves.

If the wax still struggles to melt evenly, you can gently wrap a small piece of aluminum foil around the top edge of the vessel, leaving an opening in the center for the flame. This helps reflect heat inward and encourages the outer wax to melt more evenly. After a short time, the candle will often return to a balanced melt pool.

The most helpful prevention is giving the candle enough time during the first few burns to establish an even melt pool. Once that rhythm is set, the candle will typically continue burning evenly.

Placement Makes a Difference

Where you burn a candle matters just as much as how long you burn it.

Place candles on a heat safe, level surface and keep them away from drafts, fans, or open windows. Air movement can cause uneven burning and excess flickering.

Always keep candles away from pets, children, and loose objects, and never leave a burning candle unattended.

Natural Wax Has a Personality

Wanderlight candles are made with a coconut soy wax blend, and natural wax comes with a little personality of its own.

You may notice frosting, subtle texture changes, or slight color variation over time. These are normal characteristics of coconut soy wax and are not flaws.

What matters most is performance. Each candle is tested with care so it burns evenly, safely, and beautifully when used as intended.

Caring for Candles Between Burns

To preserve both appearance and fragrance, store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Heat and prolonged sun exposure can cause natural wax to discolor and may affect scent strength over time.

Treating a candle gently between uses helps it stay beautiful and true to its original character.

Returning and Reusing Vessels

Sustainability is an ongoing practice at Wanderlight, and reusing glass is one small way we can reduce waste together.

If you finish a candle and the vessel is still in good condition, you are welcome to return it through our vessel return program. Returned vessels are cleaned, evaluated, and reused when possible.

Thank you for helping give these vessels a second life.

A Simple Burn Guide

For easy reference, here is a gentle burn guide to return to anytime.

Candle Burn Guide

  • First burn: 3-4 hours

  • Regular burns: 2-4 hours

  • Wick trim: one quarter inch before each burn

  • Stop use when: half an inch of wax remains

  • Typical burn time: about 40–50 hours, depending on burn habits and environment

Each Wanderlight candle is tested carefully to ensure a steady, balanced burn when cared for with these simple practices.

Candle care does not need to feel technical. Trimming the wick can be a pause. Lighting the candle can mark the beginning of a quiet moment. Letting it burn can become a companion to rest, reflection, or stillness.

Candles are meant to be enjoyed slowly. A little care simply helps them burn beautifully from the first light to the last glow.

Each Wanderlight candle is poured and tested in small batches so the flame burns steadily and the fragrance unfolds as it was designed to.

Thank you for letting Wanderlight be part of your rituals.

✨ Glow softly. Wander wildly.
